Feeling stuck in a rut can be a frustrating and disheartening experience and a really common one for so many of us. It can make us feel like we're not making any progress and that we're not living the life we want to live. Decisions get more difficult and we become less kind to ourselves. And really often it can feel like this is a personal failing - it often feels like everyone else got a memo which skipped us by. This feels like it is caused by a variety of factors, such as a lack of direction, a lack of motivation, or a lack of purpose, but in truth, it is always caused by the same thing: our thoughts.
We think one of the keys to moving away from this feeling of being stuck is to gain clarity and focus. But if we knew how to do that, we would have achieved it already. I believe that taking the time to reflect on what we want to achieve, what our goals are, and what is important to us. It allows us time to reflect on where we are happy and what different momentum would allow us to feel. This means being honest with ourselves about what is holding us back and what we need to change in order to move forward.
Once we have identified the emotions we hope this would allow us, it is worth spending a little time identifying the thoughts which would encourage these emotions. Maybe it is “I am trying, “I am learning”, or “the outcome is worth the or I have the desire to change this.” Find out what works for you. Once this has been identified, you can begin the next step is to take action. This means setting small, achievable goals and taking consistent, focused action towards achieving them. It also means being willing to try new things and to take risks, even if it means stepping out of our comfort zone.
It is also important to be patient with ourselves during this process. Moving away from a rut takes time and effort, and it's important to remember that progress is not always linear. There will be setbacks and obstacles, but it is important to keep moving forward and to keep our focus on our goal feelings and the will to move towards them.
It is important to remember that just because something feels stuck, that does not mean it always has to be this way. There is very little in life which always stays the same, and the more you experiment with what could be possible for you, the more those possibilities become part of the options which will become available.
